I am head chef at a popular hotel and asked to write a cookbook?
My Boos (the hotel owner asked me to write a cookbook that can be sold as the cookbook of the hotel, I've been offered a commission on sales to do and write about myself in the book, now the book is composed of my recipes. I want to know is where am I, what rights do I have, which are my recipes, and want to know what the outcome would if I were to go out and work while another company or to open my own shop I use these recipes again, I'm giving them rights. I recently read Gordon's book Ramsay "playing with fire" and it talks about this very thing and given the value of their intellectual property, basically how much better their knowledge, ie, recipes, and put a price on that if anyone can shed some light on this for me would great.thanks
I was previously asked to write a book for a company where he worked. (a history of your company, in fact). As I understand it, if you write a book on working time – and given time to sit down and do it, then they are copyright owners as it becomes a part of their work – have been ordered to do so – This is how a journalist paid to write for a newspaper, or someone who works in advertising, writing propaganda. (You must also pay for expenses incurred, such as buying extra food, photography, etc.) The only rights you would have to be residual in the sense that no one can alter what you have written, (say change your prescription without their permission) and that his name is recognized as author of the work. A company may ask you to sign these rights – so it is essential you do not. Whenever you sign not to maintain these rights. See first link in the source list. If you are paying to write to the working time then it all depends on the contract. And here I must say that you will require a written contract to avoid any possibility of future problems. In it, the situation changed jobs to another hotel and what happens to the book should be clearly established. Once you have a draft contract, how do you know that good? Visit the second link to see a society of law that will review the contract of the authors and make sure to get the best deal for a fixed price of £ 200. It might sound a lot, but probably worth it. Alternatively, you might find you like to explore yourself an agent. If you are in London The easiest way would be to go along to the London Book Fair, 14-16 April. This could cost up to £ 25 to come in (its not very clear) Look at the website of the list of exhibitors. See books published by the respect and climb into your stand when dont look too busy. Can be a bit surprised by his cheek, but you will get a lot of information and help from a conversation of 5 minutes – even if they are not interested they themselves, ask if they can recommend anyone else who is, or give advice on the points raised. I've been there in the past and most people will very nice and helpful. Finally, if the hotel is receiving this publication – they are using? Are they a good name. Ask to see a book that recently made similar to what they are proposing. Do you part with money – called vanity publishing – which means they end up with a closet full of books that no one has any incentive to sell. Good luck!
